Protectors for carpets
There are many types and brands of protectors.   Some protectors are a spray on after
the cleaning of the carpets by a professional carpet cleaner.
Chem-Dry (registered name)
is one company that I know of that is able to put the protector into the cleaning solution
so that they can clean and protect at the same time.  They also have a protector called
CCP that can dry up oils in carpeting.  Another type of protector is built into the carpet
fiber itself, such as
Duponts (registered name)Stain Master Carpets (registered name).
Many other carpet manufactures also have that type of built in protector.
There is one thing that all consumers must know about protectors.
They will wear off.
Even the built in blockers will wear off with traffic, or cleaning. In the 90s  Dupont had a
course given to carpet cleaners some years ago about the protectors and has said that the
protectors that are built into the carpet will wear off with normal traffic in about two (2)
years.  These blockers can be put back into the carpets with certified protectors.  How
does one know which protectors  are certified?  The only way is to ask the manufacturer,
otherwise if you have any kind of warranty, one may void it if the rules are not followed
by the manufacturer.  As for the years 2000 to now that seems to have change with the
more advance protectors built into the carpets.
If you have 90s carpets with stain blockers its interesting about fleas, if you have fleas in
your carpet and you happen to have carpets with blockers built in, you could lose that
ability of the blockers by using products that get rid of fleas.  Have no fear though, that
blocker can always be put back.
Another thing is to remember that no amount of protector will keep the carpet from
getting dirty.  Its all in how easy it is to get that carpet clean again.  Its always better to
put protector on you carpets if you plan on keeping them for a while.
Red Stains in carpets
In most cases, red stains can be taken out.  Most professional carpet cleaners will have a
way off taking that red stain out, but to the customer its an extra cost and not always is it
done with total success.   New carpets with stain blockers built in will be as simple as
club soda in a sprayer bottle and wiping off with a bath towel.  Other carpets will need
treatments with red out, or red alert, or what ever product that is out there.  For an
average home owner to take that stain out is not as easy as one would like.   Really, leave
that one to a professional and remember to not always expect a full recovery.
Corn Rolling carpets
Corn rolling is a condition that may appear on carpets either before or after cleaning.  It is
produced by rows of tufts falling over at the tips.  Because every fourth or fifth row of
tufts is involved, it produces a regular pattern.  It generally occurs perpendicular to traffic
direction in carpets that have fine, soft yarn with a fairly high cut pile.  The ultimate cause is
the carpet may bring this problem to light, but wear, not cleaning, produces this problem.
Vacuuming and raking perpendicular to the traffic patterns may help this condition. A
typical cause would be a rolling chair over a long period of time.
Pilling carpets
Pilling is the situation that occurs when one end of the fiber works free and the other end
becomes entangled to produce a fuzzy ball or pill.  If these are not removed by
vacuuming, they can be removed by lifting the main ball portion and using scissors to cut
the fibers that hold the ball into the carpet or fabric.  They will come back over a period
of time.
You just cleaned a dark spot in you carpet and later your carpet
looks gray, brown, or yellow.
Ratts, you just cleaned that spot, now its back but it does look different.  Okay, relax, it
may just be oxidized, that will be a simple one for you.  What you need to do is put some
kind of buffered acid on it, like lemon juice or white distilled vinegar.  Get a spray bottle,
an old bath towel.  Mix 4 parts water, 1 part lemon juice or vinegar, spray the area lightly,
or fog it over the area.  Brush with your hand to work the solution into the carpet, you will
see it start to change. Now blot with the towel to dry up the carpet just a bit.   Refer to
Oxidizing for the reason why this happens.
Pet Stains in carpets
Pet stains can be a problem.  Urine from any animal including from humans can make it
very difficult to bring back the newness of carpets.  If the urine was just on the surface of
the carpet there would not be a problem.   Blot it up with a terry cloth towel and wash
the towel.  Using an antimicrobial and then cleaning to get rid of the contamination must
be done.   Not letting the urine get to the pad is the main trick.  Once the urine gets to the
pad, then you do have a problem.   At that point really the carpet will need to be lifted
and the pad taken out, floor treated and the bottom of the carpet treated then new pad
put in.  That right there can be a major expense.  Its like doing a water damage job,
which the general public does not seem to understand the cost of having that done.

How can you tell where your pet has been?  Use a black light, and shine it around
the carpets, that will let you see whats going on.
If you know you are going to have pets, having the pad with the plastic on top is the way
to go.
